Jack Dorsey, the CEO of Twitter, is one of the youngest billionaires in the world. He was born on November 19, 1976, in St. Louis, Missouri. He is CEO, chairman of the board, and also executive chairman of Twitter, one of the worlds leading social media and news sharing platforms. At a small age of 15, he developed a dispatch software that is still in use by some taxi cab companies these days.  Jack Dorsey is also the founder of the world’s very first online payment service known as Square in 2010. It is a payment gateway that simplifies data security and minimizes the risks as well.

The Idea of Twitter

Jack is a web developer who was interested in computers and communication. He began programming at a very early age when he was studying at Bishop DuBourg High School. After studying at Missouri University of Science and Technology, he shifted to New York University from where he eventually dropped out before completing his degree. After that, Jack Dorsey went to California, where he presented his dispatch software. In 2000, he started his company that provided his dispatch software through the internet. After establishing his business, he came up with the idea of Twitter, a social networking site that is used by millions of people now. He developed Twitter as it would join the broad reach of his dispatch software, providing the ease of instant messaging.

Biz Stone, a former Odeo executive, said that one day Jack Dorsey approached the company and said, “what if you could share your status with your friends and family easily so that they know what you are doing at the moment.” Dorsey, along with two more people Stone and Odeo co-founder, started a company. The company, later on, progressed as Twitter, which was initially named Obvious. After that, it took them only two weeks to develop a website where people could post really short messages up to 140 characters. Those short messages were known as tweets on Twitter. As the CEO of Twitter, he tweeted for the first time as “just setting up my twitter” on March 21, 2006.

In the beginning, twitter didn’t gain much popularity and considered a mere tool for uploading short texts. During a popular late-night comedy show, the host Conan O’Brien built a segment named “Twitter Tracker,” dedicated to making fun of Twitter users. But it all changed as soon as the celebrities and other known personalities that had a large number of following started tweeting about their stuff. Seeing this, more people began to have an interest in twitter. Further, Twitter became a very powerful platform for the candidates of the US presidential campaign. Barrack Obama and John McCain in 2008 used twitter as a platform to update their supporters about the updates of their campaign. Twitter gained international fame after the June 2009 presidential election of Iraq. It all happened because the text messaging services were banned. Jack Dorsey delayed the planned maintenance of twitter so that the protesters could continue making tweets as it was the only platform available for them.

The Rise of Twitter

Twitter users increased to 105 million who tweeted 50 million times a day in 2010. After that, it started to gain users rapidly. People found it convenient to post short messages and let their loved ones and followers know what they are up to. During this time, Dorsey focused on other projects as well. He invested in another social networking company and released a new venture, Square, that allows people to receive their payments through a small device plugged into their phones or another electronic device, e.g., computer, etc. Dorsey said that in the future, he would be introducing a lot more technologies that will make life a lot easier. The starting share price of the company was $26, but they went up to $45 on the first day of trading. In a matter of few hours, the Dorsey shares went up to $23.4 million that made him a billionaire. Dorsey returned to Twitter in 2015 and served as an interim CEO and then its CEO.
