Doughnuts are undeniably one of the most popular dessert-cum-snack, consumed all across the globe and can be a part of your lip-smacking breakfast recipes. A typical doughnut contains 242 calories, which makes it a one-time dense snack and is a delight when paired with coffee, specifically Dalgona coffee in break-fast or tea in the evenings as a teatime snack is unbeatable. Even though dough-oriented recipes tend to be trickier, doughnuts are one of the easy to make dessert recipes. There are 2 best types of doughnuts, baked or deep-fried, both equally good, but you can try the one according to the level of equipment and ingredients available.

Baked Doughnuts

The main component to rise the dough is yeast, but for baked doughnuts, yeast can be substituted with baking soda. For baking the doughnuts, a doughnut pan is necessary as the liquid batter cannot be held together on a plain baking tray.

The ingredients required for baked doughnuts recipe include:

1 cup flour

1 tsp baking powder

¼  baking soda

½  salt, one egg

1/3 cup brown sugar

¼ cup milk

¼ cup yogurt

2tbsp melted butter

1 tsp vanilla extract.


Preheat the baking oven at 170 Celsius.

The first process is to incorporate all the dry ingredients: whisk the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt in a separate bowl. For the liquid batter, whisk the egg, sugar, milk, and yogurt, melted butter, and vanilla. Once all the liquids are combined, add in the dry ingredients and mix it with a spatula until no lumps are left. The critical thing to note here is, don’t overmix.

Grease the doughnut pan with butter and pour 2/3 of the mold with a spoon or piping bag. Bake the doughnuts for 10 mins and cool the tray on a wire rank. Remove the doughnuts once cooled and glaze them with icing sugar syrup or toss them in cinnamon caster sugar mixture.

Deep-fried Doughnuts

The deep-fried doughnut recipe is more complicated rather than being one of the easy to make dessert recipes. Still, if followed precisely, it can yield the same outcome as a store-bought doughnut, competing for the likes of Krispy Kreme and Dunkin Donuts. This doughnut recipe requires yeast to raise the dough, as they are deep-fried rather than using the baking soda.

This doughnut recipe requires:

1 cup milk

¼  cup + 1 tsp sugar

2 ¼  tsp dry yeast

4 ½ cup flour

½ tsp salt

6 tbsp melted butter

2 eggs

1 tsp vanilla

Cooking oil for frying.


Grease a large bowl with cooking oil in which dough is going to be prepared. For the yeast mixture, add a teaspoon of sugar in warm milk and stir it while wholly dissolved; then add in the yeast and wait for the mix once bubbles appear on top, this will take 5-8 minutes.

For the dry ingredients, whisk in the flour, and salt. For liquid ingredients, whisk in sugar, butter, eggs, and vanilla lightly. Then add in the yeast mixture, and once all liquids are appropriately mixed, add in the dry ingredients and knead with hand or stand mixer with dough tool attached. If the combination seems a bit fluid, add in the 1 tsp of flour or more in the same proportion once it forms a firm dough.

Mold the dough in a ball shape and place it in the oiled bowl and cover it with a damp towel. This step will allow the dough to rise, which almost doubles in size after 1 hour.

Punch the dough firmly once it double in size and remove it from the bowl. Place the dough in floured slab and roll until it achieves a ½ inch deep thickness. Use a doughnut cutter or any circular biscuit cutter with a piping mold to form a doughnut hole. On a greased parchment-lined baking tray, place the doughnuts and let them sit for one more hour, covered with a damp towel so the dough can rise again.

Meanwhile, pour in the oil and turn on the stove while the tray sits for five more minutes. Deep fry them until they reach a golden brown color. Transfer on a paper towel-lined tray, so all the excess oil is dried.

You can toss hot doughnuts in sugar mixture or cool them for glaze topping.

Doughnuts Glaze

The recipe of doughnuts is incomplete without the glaze; the syrup-like topping enrichens the flavor and adds a pop of color, making it a delicious and equally attractive dessert. The icing glaze is very easy to make, all you need is 1+½ cup icing sugar, ¼ cup milk, added in parts until it forms a thick syrup. You can add the food color in the mix and top the doughnuts with sprinkles to complete the look.

Making glazed doughnuts can seem like a daunting task, but with the no-bake, easy to make dessert recipe, anyone can try to make this beloved snack at home. Once you have attempted the no-bake method and have time to spare, I would recommend trying the deep-fried one as well because it will provide you with the same quality or even better taste than the store-bought ones.
